Pre Emergent Weed Control

Boise Weed Control Services

Pre-Emergent Weed Control

Stop weeds before they start. We apply season-timed pre-emergents to block germination and, where requested, a bare-ground/sterilant program for gravel lots, rock beds, fence lines, easements, and hardscapes where you want zero growth. In spring, we combine pre-emergent with your initial broadleaf treatment to clean up existing weeds and lock out new ones—keeping landscapes tidy and maintenance simple.

What works in the Treasure Valley (Pre-Emergent & Bare-Ground)

Irrigation schedules, canal wind, and warm spring soils fuel weed germination across Boise–Meridian–Nampa. We target timing + placement: a spring pre-emergent + broadleaf pass on lawns and beds to handle existing growth and prevent new starts, and a once-a-year bare-ground/sterilant application on areas where no vegetation is desired (gravel/rock, utility pads, cracks, fence lines). Expect fewer mid-season breakouts and cleaner edges; spot touch-ups handle late arrivals from windblown seed or soil disturbances.

How we do it

  • Inspect & map zones: lawn/beds vs bare-ground/hardscape
  • Spring lawn pass: pre-emergent + broadleaf post-emergent
  • Bare-ground option: sterilant blend on rock, gravel, DG, pads, cracks
  • Edge focus: fence lines, curb/drive seams, mailbox pads, equipment pads
  • Drift/runoff controls and buffer spacing from desirable plants
  • Notes for irrigation timing and mulch depth; schedule touch-ups if needed

Before we arrive

  • Mow/trim normally; do not scalp
  • Clear toys, hoses, décor from rock beds and hardscape seams
  • Avoid fresh mulching 7 days before service (we want product at soil)
  • Water schedule handy (we’ll note timing)

After we treat

  • Follow watering guidance we leave (many pre-emergents activate with moisture)
  • Avoid disturbing treated soil for 24–48 hours (raking/aeration)
  • For bare-ground areas, keep runoff away from lawns/ornamentals
  • Report any late-season escapes so we can spot-treat quickly

Where we apply

  • Pre-emergent + broadleaf (spring): lawns, bed edges, perimeter seams
  • Bare-ground/sterilant (once-a-year): gravel drives, rock beds (no plants), fence lines, utility/equipment pads, parking blocks, alley/easement edges, sidewalk/drive cracks
  • We do not apply sterilant within root zones of trees/shrubs, vegetable beds, play areas, or anywhere vegetation is desired.

Program options

  • Standard Landscape Plan (Residential): Spring pre-emergent + broadleaf, with seasonal spot control as needed.
  • Bare-Ground Plan (No Growth): Annual sterilant on designated areas, plus mid-season inspection/touch-ups.
  • Commercial/HOA: Fence-line grids, rock medians, sign islands, dumpster pads, and perimeter crack control with service maps and photo logs.

FAQs

  • Does pre-emergent kill existing weeds?
    Short: No—it blocks new weeds.
Detail: Pre-emergent creates a barrier at the soil surface that stops germination. We pair it with a broadleaf post-emergent in spring to knock down what’s already up.
  • How long does it last?
Short: Typically a season on lawns/beds; about a year on bare-ground sterilant areas.
Detail: Longevity depends on soil disturbance, irrigation/rain, and traffic. We design intervals based on your site and follow with spot service if needed.
  • Is “bare-ground/sterilant” safe near my plants?
Short: Keep it off root zones.
Detail: Sterilants are for no-growth zones only. We set buffers from ornamentals/trees, control drift/runoff, and avoid slopes that drain into lawns or beds.
  • When will I see results?
Short: Existing weeds decline within days (spring pass), and new weeds don’t emerge.
Detail: Pre-emergent results are mostly “invisible” (seeds fail to sprout). Bare-ground areas stay clean; any late arrivals from windblown seed are spot-treated.
  • Do I still need mulch or edging?
    Short: Yes—good partners.
Detail: A thin mulch layer plus pre-emergent reduces light and seed contact. Clean edging keeps gravel/hardscape barriers intact for longer control.
  • Will rain ruin it?
    Short: Usually helps activation.
Detail: Light irrigation or rainfall is beneficial; heavy immediate runoff isn’t. We’ll leave exact watering notes based on your site.

Reach Out to Pestcom Pest Management Today

It is important to know when to use a pre-emergent to fight weeds. Our team has the knowledge and expertise to understand which weeds are growing in your yard and during which season they thrive. We take into account factors like ground temperature and weather conditions, which need to be just right before we apply your treatments. We don’t want these treatments to immediately wash away because of rain or wind. Ideal temperatures for these treatments are typically warm and humid, though you should ensure the ground is thoroughly dry before applying these treatments. Pestcom Pest Management will do all the heavy lifting for you!

Our FAQ

Have questions? We are here to help. Still have questions or can't find the answer you need? Give us a call at 208-795-3298 today!

  • Do you offer commercial or HOA pest control?
Yes. We provide commercial pest control for offices, restaurants, schools, multifamily properties, warehouses, and HOA common areas across Boise, Nampa, Meridian, and the broader Treasure Valley. Each program is built around the property's specific pest pressures, occupancy patterns, and compliance needs, and commercial agreements are negotiated by individual property and proposal with terms tailored to the owner or management company.
  • Do you service rural properties, acreage, and homes near canals?
Yes. The Treasure Valley has a mix of subdivision homes, acreage, agricultural property, and homes near canal corridors and irrigation ditches — each environment creates different rodent and insect pressures, and our technicians adjust inspection points and treatment plans accordingly. Properties near water sources typically experience heavier spider and web activity, and acreage often requires additional attention to outbuildings, entry points, and rodent harborage areas.
  • Do you require a contract, and how does cancellation work?
Pestcom uses a service agreement rather than a fixed contract — a 12-month initial agreement that converts to month-to-month after the first year. The agreement is mutual: we commit to delivering the services quoted at the agreed price, and you commit to giving us the opportunity to address any service concerns before canceling. If a concern is raised and we're unable to resolve it, no cancellation fee applies. Customers moving outside our service area without a transfer option are also exempt from any cancellation fee. After the first year, service is month-to-month and can be canceled at any time with no fee. Cancellations are processed via written notice or a conversation with our billing team that we document in writing. Commercial agreements are negotiated individually by property and proposal, and specialty services like bed bug, termite, and one-time treatments operate on service agreements rather than annual contracts.

Improve Your Lawn with Pre-Emergent Weed Control

Maintaining your lawn demands meticulous attention, which can be difficult when juggling all the other demands of your life. Instead of struggling to care for your lawn yourself, call the experts at Pestcom Pest Management. We’ll do all the hard work for you so that all you need to do is sit back, relax, and enjoy a lush green lawn all summer long.

As the summer flourishes, however, the encroachment of weeds and other detrimental plants can become a real nuisance. Not only do weeds disrupt the aesthetics of your lawn, but they can also hinder healthy growth. Without proper control measures, weeds can quickly overtake your turf, competing with the grass for essential resources like water, sunlight, and nutrients.

We are able to help you with a wide variety of weeds, including:

  • Grassy weeds
  • Broadleaf weeds
  • Warm weather weeds
  • Cool weather weeds
  • Annual weeds
  • Perennial weeds

At Pestcom Pest Management, we use pre-emergent treatments to block weed seeds from germinating before they emerge in your lawn. We use selective herbicides, which target specific weeds, for your lawn because they are safe to use in areas with other plants and grasses.

We are also able to treat your hardscapes and non-lawn areas for weeds. We apply long-term pre-emergent or sterilant treatments to keep these spaces free of unwanted vegetation. Typically, these are non-selective herbicides, which kill all vegetation and prevent it from regrowing. These are not appropriate for use on your lawn because they can also kill your healthy grass.
