Boxelder & Elm Seed Bugs Treatment Seasonal nuisance invaders like boxelder bugs and elm seed bugs swarm homes across Boise, Meridian, Nampa, Caldwell, and neighboring Treasure Valley communities — especially in late summer and fall. While harmless in terms of biting or structural damage, their large numbers and tendency to invade siding, windows, and indoor spaces can be a serious irritation for homeowners. Pestcom’s targeted control stops these invaders before they become an indoor problem.

Stink Bug Control in Boise

Serving the Treasure Valley Since 2009, Backed by a Satisfaction Guarantee

Every fall, the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (Halyomorpha halys), a shield-shaped, mottled-brown insect roughly half to three-quarters of an inch long, begins clustering on sun-warmed walls across Boise and the surrounding Treasure Valley, looking for any gap it can slip through before temperatures drop. Pestcom Pest Management has been handling stink bugs and other seasonal invaders here since 2009. They’re covered under our general pest service with the same satisfaction guarantee we apply to every job: if covered pests return between visits, we come back at no charge.

Every service starts with a free on-site inspection. Our technician walks the interior and exterior, explains what they find, and answers your questions before any work begins. All of our technicians are individually licensed by the Idaho Department of Agriculture.

Don’t wait until stink bugs are coming through your walls. Call (208) 795-3298 or contact us online to schedule your free inspection.

When Stink Bugs Show Up in Boise

In the Treasure Valley, stink bug activity peaks in September and October. As nights cool, they aggregate on south- and west-facing walls, then work their way inside through gaps around windows, door frames, utility penetrations, and vents. Once they’re in the wall voids, attic, or basement, they’re overwintering and can re-emerge in spring.

The signs are easy to recognize: clusters of bugs on your exterior walls in late summer, frequent indoor sightings near window sills and light fixtures, and a musty or pungent odor when a bug is disturbed or crushed. Stink bugs don’t sting, bite, or spread disease, but a large indoor population is a genuine nuisance, and the odor is hard to ignore.

How We Treat Stink Bugs

Our approach is exterior-first. We apply a protective perimeter treatment targeting the foundation, eaves, and window and door frames. These are the aggregation and entry points where stink bugs concentrate before moving inside. This is the backbone of every service visit, and it helps reduce the chance of populations establishing indoors in the first place.

For active interior infestations, interior service is included in the plan at no additional charge. The typical flow is an initial treatment, one to two follow-up visits as needed, and then an ongoing maintenance plan that keeps the barrier fresh through subsequent seasons.

Pricing is reviewed before we begin. Nothing is performed or billed without your approval. Recurring plans use a 12-month agreement to lock in your rate. After that, service continues month-to-month. Treatment products are selected for use in homes with children and pets, and we provide clear re-entry guidance after every visit. Pet notes, gate codes, and property details are saved to your account so our technician is prepared each time.

Stink Bug Prevention Steps Boise Homeowners Can Take Now

Professional treatment is a reliable way to address an active infestation, but there are practical steps you can take to reduce how many stink bugs reach your door. Sealing entry points is the most impactful: caulk gaps around window frames, door frames, and utility penetrations; replace worn weatherstripping; and make sure exterior vents have fine-mesh screens.

A few less-obvious adjustments also help. Stink bugs are drawn to outdoor lighting at night, so switching to warm-spectrum bulbs near entry doors can reduce clustering on your exterior walls. Clearing leaf litter, mulch, and debris from the foundation removes harborage spots they use before moving inside. If you have fruit trees or a garden close to the house, removing overripe or fallen fruit eliminates a food source that draws them in.

When to Call a Professional

Prevention reduces pressure, but it doesn’t address populations that have already moved into wall voids, attics, or basements. Daily indoor sightings, bugs emerging from walls as temperatures rise in spring, or a persistent musty odor inside are all signs of an overwintering population that homeowner products typically can’t reach.

Timing matters too. Professional exterior perimeter treatments applied in late summer or early fall, before stink bugs fully establish overwintering sites, can be more effective than reactive treatments mid-winter. Our free on-site inspection identifies exactly where activity is concentrated on your property and which entry points need to be addressed, giving us a precise starting point rather than a general one.

Our FAQ

Have questions? We are here to help. Still have questions or can't find the answer you need? Give us a call at 208-795-3298 today!

  • Do you offer commercial or HOA pest control?
Yes. We provide commercial pest control for offices, restaurants, schools, multifamily properties, warehouses, and HOA common areas across Boise, Nampa, Meridian, and the broader Treasure Valley. Each program is built around the property's specific pest pressures, occupancy patterns, and compliance needs, and commercial agreements are negotiated by individual property and proposal with terms tailored to the owner or management company.
  • Do you service rural properties, acreage, and homes near canals?
Yes. The Treasure Valley has a mix of subdivision homes, acreage, agricultural property, and homes near canal corridors and irrigation ditches — each environment creates different rodent and insect pressures, and our technicians adjust inspection points and treatment plans accordingly. Properties near water sources typically experience heavier spider and web activity, and acreage often requires additional attention to outbuildings, entry points, and rodent harborage areas.
  • Do you require a contract, and how does cancellation work?
Pestcom uses a service agreement rather than a fixed contract — a 12-month initial agreement that converts to month-to-month after the first year. The agreement is mutual: we commit to delivering the services quoted at the agreed price, and you commit to giving us the opportunity to address any service concerns before canceling. If a concern is raised and we're unable to resolve it, no cancellation fee applies. Customers moving outside our service area without a transfer option are also exempt from any cancellation fee. After the first year, service is month-to-month and can be canceled at any time with no fee. Cancellations are processed via written notice or a conversation with our billing team that we document in writing. Commercial agreements are negotiated individually by property and proposal, and specialty services like bed bug, termite, and one-time treatments operate on service agreements rather than annual contracts.

Stink Bugs vs. Boxelder Bugs vs. Elm Seed Bugs

Three different insects show up on Treasure Valley homes every fall, and they’re easy to confuse. Knowing which one you’re dealing with helps set accurate expectations before treatment.

Stink Bugs
The Brown Marmorated Stink Bug is shield-shaped and mottled brown with distinctive white bands on its antennae. At half to three-quarters of an inch, it’s the largest of the three, and its defining feature is the strong, musty odor it releases when crushed or threatened.

Boxelder Bugs
Boxelder bugs are black with bold red-orange markings along their wings and body. They’re smaller than stink bugs and closely associated with boxelder, maple, and ash trees, where they feed before migrating to structures in fall.

Elm Seed Bugs
Elm seed bugs are the smallest of the group, dark brown with reddish markings, and a more recent arrival in the Treasure Valley. As the name suggests, they’re tied to elm trees and follow the same overwintering pattern as the other two.

All three species move indoors in fall the same way: exterior aggregation followed by entry through gaps in the building envelope. Exterior perimeter treatment targeting those entry points and aggregation sites can be effective for each of them. That said, misidentifying the pest can lead to DIY approaches that miss the mark. A professional inspection confirms the species and the right treatment strategy. Pestcom Pest Management covers all three under our general pest service.
